Fashionista coming of age

Alyson and Trevor’s granddaughter had her 18th birthday party last week. Freya’s instructions were clear, a chocolate cake filled with chocolate fudge and covered in black icing. The writing had to be gold and the cake should feature a pair of red soled stilettos and a bottle of Prada perfume. Your wish is my command Freya- add a bit of sparkle and here we are!

Road Cyclist

Ian is a keen road cyclist and celebrated his 80th birthday with his family. To add to the fun, Penny asked me to make him a cake for them all to enjoy featuring his beloved blue bike. So here is the lemon layer cake, decorated to fit the occasion.

Rosie’s first birthday

Annie contacted me through FB messenger to ask if I could make a cake for her daughter’s first birthday. She sent me some pictures from the internet of the sort of thing that she liked and after a chat on the phone we came to a decision. Inside this pretty cake is a Victoria sponge layered with jam and buttercream. The cake is covered with more buttercream and decorated with handmade models. Happy first birthday Rosie.

Golden wedding lace and freesias

Another golden wedding anniversary. Trevor and Alyson chose a lovely rich fruit cake soaked in brandy and covered in traditional marzipan and icing. 50 years ago, Alyson had a lace dress and carried a bouquet of multi coloured freesias so I tried to replicate that in sugar on the cake. Great party as well. Happy Anniversary you two.

North Coast 500 adventure

Debbie contacted me months ago to order a special cake for her intrepid mother in law. Margaret will be celebrating her 80th birthday this weekend and then on her actual birthday will set off in her campervan with her Labrador Molly by her side. They are off up to the Scottish Highlands to complete the North Coast 500. What a way to celebrate!

So here is a lemon layer cake depicting the scenery of Scotland around the sides

Good luck to you both, have a wonderful trip.

Sun, sea and sand

Hazel and her family gathered in Milford to celebrate her mums birthday. She showed me some pictures of beach themed cakes and this was the result. Underneath the icing is a three layered carrot cake with traditional cream cheese frosting between. Hope you all had fun

Gateau for a Golfer

Martin’s favourite cake is a Black Forest gateau and his favourite thing to do is play golf. So for his 80th birthday lunch Sue asked me to make a proper squishy gateau with chocolate ganache, cherries and cream, on top of which I made a sugar 80 shaped like a tiny golf course. I hope it ticked all the boxes Martin.

Tiddler Cake

Noah loves the Julia Donaldson book ‘Tiddler’ and Lucy asked me to make his third birthday cake featuring the characters from the story. Inside is a jam and buttercream layered sponge and all around are Tiddler and his fishy companions. I have three grandchildren under four, all of them discerning Donaldson fans and I was relieved when all of them instantly recognised the theme of the cake from this photo.. phew!

Happy Birthday Noah

Dinosaur for Hugh

Hugh is 4 this weekend. His grandparents showed me a picture of a cake with a dinosaur bursting out of the top and asked if I could make something similar. This great big dinosaur has a centre of marshmallow and Rice Krispie cake and is covered in sugar paste. Inside the whole cake is a layered Victoria sponge. Hope you had a lovely family party Hugh. Happy birthday.

Freesia cake

Ann’s mum’s favourite flowers are freesias so what better than a spray of sugar freesias on her lemon layer birthday cake. This 10″ sponge filled with fresh lemon curd and finished with a pretty pale green sugar ribbon and piping was more than enough to feed 25 people. Hope you weekend went well everyone.
