Thai Orchids

I love making sugar flowers, so when Wendy asked me for a Thai-themed cake for her Thai-themed 60th birthday party, I was delighted to revise my orchid making skills. This was a sponge, filled with fresh lemon curd and topped with a golden 60 as well as a spray of vibrant fuchsia-coloured sugar orchids

Danish birthday cake

Saly had seen a picture on my Facebook page of a cake similar to this one that I had made a few weeks earlier. Her granny is also a scrabble and Rummikub player, but as she is Danish, we needed a national flag as well. Here is Granny’s fresh lemon curd filled 90th birthday cake.

Beano Birthday

Amanda showed me some pictures of Beano inspired cupcakes and asked me for something similar to celebrate Oscar’s 9th birthday. So here we are, 12 chocolate cupcakes, covered in chocolate ganache and topped with Oscar’s name as well as sugar-paste depictions of Dennis the Menace and Gnasher. Hope they hit the mark.

Crossword Puzzle cake

Frances loves doing crossword puzzles, so for her big birthday family celebration, I made a sugar one, complete with sugar pencil to go with it. Inside is a vanilla sponge filled with jam and buttercream. I hear you had a lovely day Frances. Congratulations.

Pink and purple butterflies

Alexandra spent her 10th birthday with her family and her Granny picked up this gluten-free, dairy-free sponge cake from me on the morning of the celebrations. Inside, the vanilla cake was layered with squidgy dairy-free chocolate filling. Outside, a cloud of purple sugar butterflies and lots of edible glitter.

Hummingbird cake

Ginny’s daughter had a big birthday and Ginny was very keen that we should include a picture of a hummingbird in the decoration. This is a carrot cake filled with frosting and topped with a piped design and sugar flowers.

Thunderbirds are go!

Oki loves Thunderbird 1 so much that he carries his toy one round with him all the time. So what better for his birthday cake? Jam and buttercream filled sponge inside this one. Hope you had a lovely party Oki.

Medal-collectors cake

Adam had his 50th birthday. His passion is collecting medals and his wife asked me if I could make a vanilla sponge cake filled with jam and buttercream in the shape of a medal. No problem. An 1812 Naval General Service medal? Crumbs! We think this was right… it was certainly quite a challenge.

Jenny’s cake

Jenny is a prolific knitter and loves her Nordic walking. Her husband asked me to make this iced fruit cake as a surprise for her landmark birthday (we are not mentioning any numbers). I always enjoy making cakes that are very personal to the recipient. Happy Birthday Jenny

Daisy’s cake

I have made a couple of cakes for Daisy’s brother in the past, but this is her first one. She is at Edinburgh University, loves reading, sewing and everything Harry Potter. Jumble the dog features on all family cakes and of course I had to put daisies all over it.
