Jenny’s cake

Jenny is a prolific knitter and loves her Nordic walking. Her husband asked me to make this iced fruit cake as a surprise for her landmark birthday (we are not mentioning any numbers). I always enjoy making cakes that are very personal to the recipient. Happy Birthday Jenny

Daisy’s cake

I have made a couple of cakes for Daisy’s brother in the past, but this is her first one. She is at Edinburgh University, loves reading, sewing and everything Harry Potter. Jumble the dog features on all family cakes and of course I had to put daisies all over it.

Table tennis and scrabble

I made a sailing boat birthday cake for Don and a year on, he rang me to request a reciprocal arrangement for his wife. Sheila’s hobbies include table tennis, Scrabble, Rummikub and her garden, so here is the jam filled vanilla sponge that we came up with.

Champagne birthday

So Gemma has reached the big 40. what better way to celebrate than with a glass of champagne? This is a vanilla cake filled with jam and buttercream topped with a sugar bottle and glass. All edible, cheers!

Space Ship

For Henry’s 6th birthday party, Natalie chose this vanilla sponge layered with buttercream. On top is midnight blue fondant and a scene from outer space with sparkly stars and a full moon. Hope the party was not too boisterous – enjoy a well earned glass of wine afterwards.

Sailing boat

Karen was meant to be taking Kevin on holiday this week to celebrate a landmark birthday. Unfortunately the holiday was cancelled so we had to do a very quick turn round on this gluten-free lemon sponge layered with fresh lemon curd, so that at least he had a cake to cheer him up.

Golfers cake

Tiffany’s dad is a keen golfer and is over in the UK from his home in Tenerife to celebrate his big birthday with his children and grandchildren. Underneath this golf green is a vanilla sponge layered with raspberry jam.

Family Book Cake

Gill asked me to make a cake for her daughter Jo’s 50th birthday celebrations. She saw pictures on this page of my old book cake and liked the idea so we have gone with something similar. The family are split in their cake tastes so underneath the sugar pages, I made one side of this book chocolate cake with squidgy chocolate ganache filling and the other side a vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream. Jo’s family is the centre of her universe so a little picture of them (plus the dog and cat of course) went on the frontispiece.

Roller-skating cake

Ophelia loves to roller skate. For her 7th birthday party, Ophelia’s mum asked me to make this three layered sponge cake in ‘mermaid’ colours topped with sugar roller-skates to share with all her friends. Happy birthday Ophelia
