Glider pilot

Carol’s mother in law is 90 this week. She is a real adventurer, a glider pilot and a keen gardener. This is a rich fruit cake, with marzipan and then iced as a garden, complete with sugar bird table and, of course, the glider flying through with the birthday girl waving from the cockpit.

Birthday book

Karen has been organising a surprise 90th birthday party for her husband Peter. She has bought some little models to represent his main interests and is planning to put them round this cake, iced to look like an old book. Inside us Peter’s favourite, a plain Madeira cake. I hope it all went to plan

Number nine

Alfie was 9 a couple of weeks ago and had a very exciting adventure party outing at the weekend. Jam and buttercream sponge and a giant number 9. Happy birthday Alfie

Golfing 80th

Marie-Claire’s mum is 80 today. She should really be out on the golf course on a beautiful spring day like this but a big family celebration will be much more fun. This is a vanilla sponge filled with jam and buttercream. Have a lovely day.

Spitfire cake

Jenny’s brother is visiting the UK for the first time since before lockdown. It is his birthday and he is a spitfire aficionado. So Jenny asked me if I could make a cake with a spitfire ‘flying over it’. Hmmm, not quite suspended but here is my version of the sugar plane soaring above the clouds. Hope you all had a lovely day.

Learning to drive

Rufus is 17 today and is all set to learn to drive. Here is a cake to celebrate the milestone and of course, no cake for Rufus would be complete without his trusty Irish Terrier Jumble. Hope you all had a good day.

Spring daffodils

Here is a cake for Jackie’s spring birthday. Lemon sponge layered with buttercream and fresh lemon curd lies inside this pretty cake with hand made sugar daffodils. I know your dad couldn’t join you but I hope your delayed celebration went well.

Canal Holiday cake

My brother in law is spending his big birthday on a narrow boat cruising around the canals and through the multiple locks of Warwickshire. The cake has at least survived thus far. Happy birthday John.

Gardener’s vegetable plot

This birthday cake for a gardening enthusiast was enormous fun to make. Lots of tiny sugar vegetables in a grated chocolate vegetable patch decorating a layered jam and buttercream sponge. Hope you had a good day Robert.

Paw Patrol birthday

Last year Fearn had Peppa Pig on her cake, this year it needed to be ‘Skye’ from Paw Patrol. I checked it out with my own four-year-old grand daughters who confirmed it was a good idea and must be ‘lovely and pink’. Add some sugar hearts, bones, paw prints and sparkles and hopefully this two tiered jam and vanilla layer cake will meet the approval of the birthday girl.
