Tiddler Cake

Noah loves the Julia Donaldson book ‘Tiddler’ and Lucy asked me to make his third birthday cake featuring the characters from the story. Inside is a jam and buttercream layered sponge and all around are Tiddler and his fishy companions. I have three grandchildren under four, all of them discerning Donaldson fans and I was relieved when all of them instantly recognised the theme of the cake from this photo.. phew!

Happy Birthday Noah

Archery chocolate cake

Theo is 7 and was having an archery themed party this year. His mum asked for a chocolate layer cake with an archery target on the top with as many organic ingredients as possible. A nice easy one.. once we had made the arrows..

Coming of age in chocolate!

Francesca has been dreaming of a totally chocolate cake for her 18th birthday. It has become something of a family joke that when the time came it would be chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. So here we are, a chocolate sponge, covered in chocolate buttercream and crumbled flake, piled high with chocolate sweets. Even the board is covered in chocolate buttons. I really hope that this scratched the itch Francesca, Happy birthday.

Lion King Cake

Casey contacted me about a Simba cake for Nolan’s 6th birthday party. The children don’t like fondant icing much so we needed to find a way to make a passable Disney lion without the need to use too much. This is a jam and buttercream layered sponge cake covered in buttercream with just edible modelling paste used for ears and face. job done!

Dinosaur for Hugh

Hugh is 4 this weekend. His grandparents showed me a picture of a cake with a dinosaur bursting out of the top and asked if I could make something similar. This great big dinosaur has a centre of marshmallow and Rice Krispie cake and is covered in sugar paste. Inside the whole cake is a layered Victoria sponge. Hope you had a lovely family party Hugh. Happy birthday.

Double Bass Cake

Jamie’s family have come down to the south coast for their Easter break and to celebrate his 18th birthday. Jamie is a jazz double bass player so his mum asked if I could help with a suitable cake. This is a Victoria sponge filled with jam and buttercream and covered in chocolate fondant. Everything is edible apart from the slightly wonky wire strings. Hope you all had a great day.

100th birthday cake

Gwen had her super-milestone birthday coming up and Chris asked if I could make a cake for her mum to share with her family as well as some matching cupcakes that she could distribute among her friends. Chris had seen a cake on this Facebook page that she liked the style of and asked for similar decorations on a jam and vanilla sponge. So here we are. Very many congratulations Gwen and many happy returns.

Freesia cake

Ann’s mum’s favourite flowers are freesias so what better than a spray of sugar freesias on her lemon layer birthday cake. This 10″ sponge filled with fresh lemon curd and finished with a pretty pale green sugar ribbon and piping was more than enough to feed 25 people. Hope you weekend went well everyone.

The Mask

Christine’s partner Neil chose to have a cartoon character themed fancy dress party to celebrate his 50th birthday. He chose to go dressed as Jim Carey in The Mask and after a few different ideas we came up with this simple but effective design which would cater for the large number of guests. The bottom tier is a raspberry and buttercream vanilla sponge and the top is lemon cake with homemade lemon curd between the layers. Everything is completely edible – I was particularly pleased with the sugar hat and the vivid colours are certainly eye catching. I am sure you all had a fabulous time. Happy birthday Neil.
