90th Birthday Cake

The ladies at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club held a tea party for Betty’s big day. Traditional fruit cake with delicate pink roses. Rita was kind enough to write: ‘The tea party went well today and we had a lot of compliments on the cake, it was fabulous. Thank you so much for making it’.

Frozen cake for Freya

Freya wanted a Frozen cake for her fourth birthday party. When asked what she wanted on it she reeled off ‘ Elsa and Anna and Kristoff and Olaf and Hans and Sven!’ The only way to get all the characters on one cake was to use an edible print surrounded by sugar snowflakes… as long as you meet the brief!Frozen

85th birthday cake for an amateur artist

Just finished this cake requested by a lovely lady who wanted to treat her special friend for his 85th birthday.

The cake is a rich fruit cake with marzipan and white icing decorated to reflect his interests and hobbies. Pat was keen that the cake was not too garish so we stuck to muted colours to make a sugar artist’s palate and brushes as Roy is a talented oil painter. His career as an accountant is hinted at with the band of £ signs interspersed with little birds as a nod to his interest in ornithology. Being a fruit cake it will last for ages so he can enjoy it for weeks to come if there is any left after his party.

New Wedding Cake Commission

This week, I met with the lovely Az in the tea rooms close to her wedding venue in Beaulieu to discuss the details of her wedding cake over a cuppa.

The happy bride-to-be

The wedding is in July and the groom is a gardener so they have a strong theme of living plants and flowers for their day. Az is going to carry an informal bouquet of pastel lilac, cream and white flowers and green foliage which she would like reflected in her cake.

She has chosen a stacked three tiered cake in chocolate, lemon and traditional fruit cake on the top (specially for her mum), which will be iced in ivory and scattered with blossoms to match the flowers in her bouquet.

Az particularly wanted two birds on the top and after an on the spot internet search we found our inspiration. I will make a simple sugar tree with two little birds in the branches and the bride and groom’s initials scratched on the trunk.

A sketch of the final cake design

Really looking forward to getting started.   I’ll post pictures of the final product in July…

Show-stopper 80th birthday cake

Margie 80
Three-tier sponge cake: one chocolate, one lemon, one vanilla, with piped birthday greeting, Decorated with handmade sugar golf balls, golf tees, playing cards, and sunflowers. Topped with star-shaped candles and edible golden star shower.

This cake was made for the 80th birthday of a lady who threw a big party for all her friends.  She has spent much of her life raising money for hospices, she continues to play golf weekly and is a demon bridge player.  All these activities were symbolised by the sugar decorations on the cake.

Cake for summer garden wedding

Felicity and Chris
Four-tier wedding cake: tier 1 & 4 rich fruit cake, tier 2 & 3 moist ginger cake. Decorated in cream sugar paste with piped bunting motif and hand-crafted sugar flowers (white freesias, purple anemones, and pink rosebuds).

This cake was designed to reflect the garden party theme of this wedding, which was held in a National Trust garden in Scotland in August 2014.

The bride and bridesmaid carried bouquets of assorted garden flowers and the marquee was festooned with handmade bunting in shades of purple and green.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

F leaning tower of pisa
A tower of rich fruit cake, piped to resemble the iconic Italian landmark.

This groom proposed to his bride at the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and they wanted a cake to remind them of this on their big day.

With a bit of clever engineering, and creative icing, this four-tiered fruitcake wowed the guests with its gravity-defying tilt.
